Stand up paddling carries inherent dangers that we must be prepared to deal with whenever we take to the water. In this SUP safety video, stand up paddling expert Nikki Gregg and Oahu lifeguard Kurt Lager explain the SUP board flip rescue. This important technique allows you to rescue an unconscious, unresponsive or physically compromised victim using your stand up paddleboard as an aid.

Great presentation. Question: In the first example, with the swimmer’s face in the water, wouldn’t you first check for vital signs, and begin CPR if necessary, rather than take the time to paddle to shore … conditions permitting of course?
Hey David! In my opinion it would depend on the situation. Every rescue is unique and it seems to me that there are so many variables in each emergency, making it hard to say to ‘always’ do this first as opposed to that. Like you said, variables include conditions, logistics or how close you are to shore/additional help, and maybe whether there are other paddlers with you that can offer assistance at the time. Any other suggestions out there?
